What if you dedicated your life to a sport you loved and weren’t paid? Most people would feel upset, that’s how most college athletes must feel as well. Some people argue that college athletes earn enough with the scholarships they have. However, people don’t think think about other factors that come into play such as poverty. As seen in a 2011 report, an estimated amount of 85% of student athletes live below the poverty line. It isn’t taken into account that some scholarships don’t even cover all of the expenses, and most of them end up in debt after college. College student athletes should be paid for a various number of reasons, including the fact that poverty isn’t easy to deal with when it comes to college and its expenses, they end up putting their academic performance on the line and it could also be considered illegal to not pay college student athletes. …show more content…

As said in Text 1 lines 22-23, “A 2011 report entitled ‘The Price of Poverty in Big Time College Sport’ confirms that 85 percent of college athletes on scholarship live below the poverty line.” This shows how not paying college athletes is unfair, since more than half of them are living in poverty. If you need help from the government to go about your daily life, how do you expect all those kids to be able to pay off the debts that come with college? Even if you get a scholarship that pays all of your college expenses, people still need to pay for things like rent and electricity off campus. To get the money to pay for these things people need to get jobs, but how will they get jobs if their academics and their sport are taking up all of their time?
