It’s the NCAA college basketball championship. There is 10 seconds left to play and the score is a one point differential. The losing team has to inbound the ball and take the first open shot they can get. The ball is inbounded and it is a quick pick and pop. The shot goes in and the arena explodes with excitement. This is all anyone is talking about for the next week, it is covered on every headline on every sports network. There is just one problem with all of this excitement, none of these college athletes are being paid for any of this. This is something I don't understand. In the article “Pay to Play: should college athletes be paid?”, it brings up a very good point, “It is only reasonable that student athletes have a share in the millions of dollars that their sports businesses bring in. If it weren't for them, college athletics would not even exist!” (Bagaria 2). The schools make millions of dollars off of the athletes who do most of the work. The coaches make thousands and sometimes millions of dollars (if the athletes are successful) when the players do most of the work. Shockingly, even trainers and other staff members are making money when the players don't make a dime. Coaches will even receive benefits when leaving a school. In the article “College Athletes Should Be Paid”, it states, “When a coach is fired or resigns, he often receives a "golden parachute," which sometimes is in the multimillion-dollar category, while players who leave a program early receive nothing but vilification for being disloyal.” (Eitzen 8). I believe that it is only fair for college athletes to be paid when their schools and coaches are making
