In years past, the debate over whether or not college athletes should receive compensation has been going on without reaching a final decision. For example, the Sanity Code, which was passed in 1948, limited aid to only scholarships for those in need, but that is no longer followed. All athletes now receive full academic scholarships to the school they play for. Compensation in the form of a salary would never be “fair” in the amount of money or how it were determined for each athlete. Every college athlete knows ahead of time that they will not be receiving a salary no matter how well they do for the school. Although college athletes draw in a substantial amount of revenue, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) should not compensate athletes in the form of a salary as though they are employees.
Collegiate sports have been around for many years, yet the athletes have never received compensation for playing. The reasons why are more specific than those on why they should be paid. How the amount would be determined is a majorly controversial and everyone will never be satisfied, therefore none should receive any. These athletes need to be attending college not just for sports but an education.
