Should College Athletes be Paid? Being a fulltime student in college is hard enough but being a college athlete can be closely related to having a fulltime job. I know this because I am a college athlete. The issue is that college athletes are considered student-athletes that means they are amutur athletes and school comes first so therefore since they are not considered professional they can not be paid. This is such a controversial topic discussed in the sports world day in and day out because college athletes devote so much time and energy to do what they do and perform at such a high level with little reward. Also, people on the other side of the spectrum will try to say when you’re a college athlete you’re an ametur so you can not get paid and you will make money once you turn pro. This is somewhat accurate except for the fact that less than two percent of college athletes ever turn professional. Coaches and administrators in the NCAA will make the argument that you are basically getting paid you’re getting four years of free education at top schools. But again how much education did you really take in being a student-athlete with everything these same people demanded of you. In conclusion, after reading through two different articles, one opposing the idea that college athletes should be paid and one supporting it, it is safe to say I support it.
