College Athletes Should Not Be Paid You’re a high school graduate looking to play basketball at a Division 1 college; I’m the college’s head basketball coach. Do away with the time and effort of applying for scholarships. You aren’t going to receive a Full-Ride to come play basketball for me. In fact, you aren’t going to receive a scholarship at all. Instead I am going to pay you $100,000 for your Freshman year. Nothing could be better than that, right?
The University of your choice pays you $100,000 for being an athlete in their basketball program. Since the $100,000 is not a scholarship, but an income, it is subject to taxes. After all taxes are taken out, and your Freshman year of education is paid for, you now have $100.(Thelin) Even if scholarships were forgotten, and the era of college athletes receiving a wage happens, it will do little to no good for the athletes in a financial form. Many people argue that they should be paid on the same basis. The argument is that Division III athletes should be paid less than Division I athletes, simply because they are less gifted.(Peebles) This seems logical at first, but keep in mind that the reason these athletes are being paid is based on their time spent in the sport. If the purpose of paying athletes is to financially support them for hours of work in their activities, shouldn’t all players be paid the same no matter the division of their play, if their participation hours are the same? Some people strongly believe that athletes at the college level should be paid based on their athletic performance.
