Should College Athletes Get Paid?
The National Collegiate Athletic Association has strict rules on whether or not athletes should be paid. The rulebook says that no athlete shall receive any money from the university they attend or boosters other than scholarship money. Some see this as the NCAA being very greedy, but some see it as the NCAA being smart. The NCAA is one of the highest receivers of money in the entire country. The association, as a whole, receives six billion dollars per year. Many would think that, since the NCAA is worth so much, they would pay the athletes that make it profitable. He was depicted in an NCAA video game in 1995 without his consent. He sued the NCAA, but still has not received any money. A famous athlete that has been suspended for receiving money is former Heisman trophy winner and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny “Football” Manziel. He was suspended for half of a game for being paid to sign autographs. A&M still won the game, but Manziel was taught a lesson. After his UConn Huskies won the 2014 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, point guard Shabazz Napier complained about sometimes having to go to bed hungry. The reason behind this was that Napier didn't have enough money to pay for three meals per day. This gained sympathy for college athletes everywhere. Napier ended up in the NBA, so luckily he was able to finally provide himself with food.
