The term cybercrime was intended to describe criminal activity taking place in a virtual setting. However the term has over time picked up a stigma that labels it as less serious than other forms of crime. This in itself can have dangerous consequences due to the fact that while others consider it less serious it is actually the same and all other forms of crime and thus causes just as much harm. However cybercrime is the same as any other crime and should be taken with as much seriousness . The face that the term isn't taken with the same level of gravity it can lead to higher levels of victim blaming and less response by the justice system. It was also estimated that cybercrime in our modern day society has a higher level of impact on the public compared to traditional acquisitive crimes (Eurostat ICT survey and British Crimee Survey). There have been 5.8m incidents of cybercrime were recorded in the years 2015-16. This shows the importance of taking cybercrime seriously, and the importance of considering it the same as any other form of crime. Criminal activity was not considered at all a significant problem until the mid 1990s due to the low level of access to the appropriate technology. In the UK only 2% of the general public had access to the internet. This number increased to 73% in 2013, meaning that 36 million adults had access to the internet. All these statistics prove that cybercrime in our modern day society has a significant impact on society and it takes up a large part of the crime committed every year.
