Medical and dental schools should be free Medical and dental schools being free have been talked about for many years. The affordability of healthcare plays a crucial role in our healthcare system. Aspiring dental and medical students want to be able to graduate debt-free and start their dream career. A lot of the questions they receive are “is it worth it”? “How are you going to be able to pay back all that debt”? “What if I end up failing out of it and I'm left with all the debt just to not even finish”? These are the questions that are being asked. By providing free medical and dental schools compared to the high cost of paying up to 500k and leaving students in debt, it affects America negatively. “Huge medical school debts — doctors now graduate owing more than $155,000 on average, and 86 percent have some debt”(Kocher and Bach”why medical school’) More than half of medical students have all that debt and it's not very simple and easy to pay it back, they end up paying that plus interest which is way a lot to pay over the years especially as a doctor that's just starting out and fresh out of medical school. Making them free would essentially erase all that debt, lowering the amount of debt America is in, leading to it prospering more and more as a country. Making dental and medical schools free would not help them nor would it increase more doctors and dentists because they are already paid well, “The problem is that doctors don’t receive those salaries until about seven years after they enter medical school.”(frazee”The U.S”) Meaning they have a good many years living in debt and even then they will not be able to pay it back all at once. It's going to take at least 10 years after they receive their “doctor” salary to pay it
