Should elementary schools teach handwriting today? Yes in fact all elementary schools should still teach cursive handwriting to their students. Students should still be learning how to read and write in cursive because it is an old form of communication and many documents that the United States revolve around are written in cursive such as The Declaration of Independence, The Pledge of Allegiance, The Constitution and etc. Cursive writing is a process of connecting all the letters to create a word. Cursive writing has been taught all throughout history in schools since the 1700s. Cursive writing also known as “longhand writing,” has been a special way of communicating. The longhand writing is a faster way of writing words because you don’t have to pick up your pencil off the paper for each letter. Many schools around the U.S have adapted to the “Common Core Standards” which all schools are set with “unified expectations” to get every student to learn the same things for their futures (2018 NPR). I do not agree with this standard. I believe that every school should still teach cursive handwriting. There are many different benefits that children will acquire from cursive handwriting. Some benefits include early brain development in young kids, an increased comprehension and participation and it will help with their motor skills. For example, children that are learning to write tend to get confused, but if they were to learn cursive they would have an easier time telling the letters apart. They will also have a better understanding that words and sentences need to be written from left to
