Should Greek Life Be Encouraged at Universities? Universities began associating Greek-letter student societies such as sororities and fraternities to their social organizations for hundreds of years. Members of these societies describe their lifestyle to be “Greek Life”. This network of secret clubs have been stereotyped for years by outsiders who do not comprehend or acknowledge the true purpose behind these organizations. Sororities and fraternities are characterized as the “party bunch” and are portrayed as irresponsible people. Although many universities frown upon Greek Life, it can also be seen as beneficial to the future of many college students, due its strong foundation in: social networking, leadership/social skills and comfort in a new environment. Being involved in an organized society that focuses around social networking can lead to wide range of opportunities for a brighter future. Greek life gives the opportunity to meet new people and have fun while doing it. It makes it easier to communicate with your peers and to become a social butterfly, because that is the way to get your name out in the university you attend. Greek Life is also an ideal way to find leadership experiences that help members build their selves up as a person, because they have the support of their fellow brothers and sisters. Through big/little programs in Greek life, members are able to find a mentor or mentee that they can guide through their time at the university. Providing useful advice and guidance to younger members can shape students as better contributing member of society and they can do the same for the next pledge class. Universities should take the time to see that not only do the members develop skills, they also find interest that they can use to decide what they want to do for the rest of their
