Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” This quote is relevant because it shows an importance for education above all other things. High school athletes should have to maintain a certain grade point average to be able to partake in their sports. They should have to keep a high GPA because education offers more opportunities, their physical abilities may diminish, and it teaches discipline to students.
Many athletes today are not excelling academically. This could ruin their chances at attending a good college and getting a professional job. Most career fields require a good education. Less jobs are offered that are related to sports. Also, having good grades will grant more scholarship opportunities that help pay for college. Even good athletes don’t get full-athletic scholarships. Most of them depend on academic scholarships to pay for college. If an athlete’s abilities diminish or if they are injured then they may never be able to play their sports again.
