Juvenile Injustice or Justice?
When found guilty of a crime, should juveniles be charged as adults? This is an amazing question because some people think minors should be tried as adults for certain crimes such as murder or attempted murder but others think they shouldn’t because minors are young and make rash decisions. I don’t think minors should be charged as adults and here’s why.
The definition of minor is a person under the age of full legal responsibility. When someone thinks of a minor they think of a person under the age of 18 and a person who makes decisions that aren’t the best or even rash decisions they may regret later. According to, “Should Juveniles Be Tried as Adults?” it states that,”Most young offenders do not become adult criminals. But when we punish them as adults, we change those odds.” This tells us that the young offenders learn their mistakes but if tried as an adult and punished as if the minor was an adult, then the outcome of it could be much worse. The article also states that their education and future employment chances are marked worse. The juvenile system was created for a reason, it wasn’t created just to be ignored by the people. According to the same article, “The separate juvenile system was developed both to mitigate these harms and because youth were being preyed upon”. Another reason it can be harmful is if the juvenile is put into an adult prison then the minor could get seriously injured. According to the article, “22 Should Juveniles Be Tried as Adults Pros and Cons,” the article states,” There are approximately 10,000 children who are currently housed in adult prison or jails on any given day in the United States. This response to the crime places them at a needless risk because a child is five times more likely to be sexually assaulted when serving time in an adult prison than they are if they are in a juvenile facility.” Putting a minor in an adult prison puts them at great risk and if the minor is sent to one then the minor is more likely to commit
