Should the federal minimum wage be raised? The current federal minimum wage in the United States is 7.25$ per hour, yet “the majority of Americans support a higher minimum wage.” (The U.S Department of Labor Blog) Many Americans believe that raising the minimum wage will have a positive impact in reducing the unemployment and poverty percentages. This, thus creating a more efficient economy in and for the United States which would eventually get the United States out of debt. The Minimum wage, however, should not be raised as it will not help diminish the unemployment and poverty rates nor create a more efficient economy.
According to BeBusinessed.com, “New Zealand passed the world’s first national minimum wage laws way back in 1894.” However, it wasn’t until 1938 when the United States adopted a minimum wage of its own. It was introduced by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938 and was merely 25 cents an hour which would approximately be in an equivalent of about four dollars in today’s currency.

The poor thing of getting out of poverty, and the politicians think about the economy. There even are some people that believe that a raise in the minimum wage will establish equality in the United States. For example, Senator Bernie Sanders believes that, “Millions of Americans are working for totally inadequate wages. We must ensure that no full-time worker lives in poverty. The current federal minimum wage is starvation pay and must become a living wage. We must increase it to $15 an hour over the next several years.” He also stated that, “We must also establish equal pay for women.
