Should Public Colleges Be Tuition-Free Essay

Public college is a great jumpstart to someone's career in the making and could be at no tuition cost. Tuition-free public colleges allow people who want to study, to do it at little to no cost which is a jumpstart to someone's future. It also allows students freedom in choosing what they want to learn and what career to pursue without having to worry about a huge amount of debt. Public colleges should be tuition-free as the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Public college should be tuition-free because not all students are financially stable enough to handle the college debt costs. Source 1 states that “Students are coming out of college already buried under a mountain of debt before they have a chance to start their careers.” This

Source 1 shows this by stating that “The GI Bill allowed 2.2 million veterans to earn a college education…An estimated of 40%of those veterans would not have been able to attend college otherwise.” By making the public colleges tuition-free, it let many continue their education. These veterans would not have attended college if the opportunity was not given to them which shows that by it being free, more people can pursue what they want. Source 1 also states that “‘A dramatic increase in the number of Americans with college credentials is absolutely for our economic, social and cultural development as a country.’” If public colleges were tuition-free many more Americans would have college credentials which are needed/wanted for the development of the United States. Public colleges that are tuition-free do not benefit the country as much as they benefit the students. However, money that is not given from the college tuition is given through investments the students make when not worrying about college debt. Source 1 demonstrates this by stating that “The beneficiaries of the free tuition contributed to the economy by buying cars and homes, and getting jobs after college, while not being burdened by college debt.” Based on my evidence, the economy still benefitted from students who didn't pay their tuition because of their own investments they made with the money from the jobs they studied for on their terms. Therefore, students that did not pay tuition and the economy both had their benefits in their ways showing that the country's economy eventually gets returned
