“Should Rumble Fish be banned?” is a question a lot of schools and teachers are asking, and here is the answer. The book Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton has many parts of a book that would get it banned, such as substance abuse, violence, alcohol abuse, and crime. However, Rumble Fish should not be banned because it shows examples of what people should not do in life, teaches real-world lessons, and expands students' views on the world.
In Rumble Fish, Rusty-James is expelled for bad behavior and missing school. This is proven by the quote from Rumble Fish saying, “‘We have decided that we can no longer tolerate your kind of behavior. He then went to list all the things I’d been sent to the office for this year: fighting, swearing, smoking, sassing the teacher, cutting classes…” (Hinton 62). This is an example of what not to do because it shows the consequences if somebody were to skip school for example. Another detail is that Rusty James had got into a fight with Biff Willcox and got cut by a switchblade. If Rusty James never took that fight, the consequences would not have been faced. Nearing the end of the book, Rusty-James commits burglary and gets placed in prison for his crime. Again, if people do not steal, those people will not be in jail.

His lesson is “Even the most primitive societies have an innate respect for the insane” (Hinton 103). A second lesson from Rumble fish is “Loyalty is his only vice.” (Hinton 103). Another lesson comes from Rusty-James’s dad. This lesson is “A different worldview isn’t crazy, but it can drive you crazy.” (Hinton 127). These are all real-world lessons from Rumble Fish that can be applied to real life, and Rumble Fish teaches these lessons to kids throughout the
