How much time and money does one spend trying to look “trendy” for school? A ton. School uniforms are clothing that is selected to wear during the school day. Recently, public schools have been changing their rules and adopting school uniforms. Schools have seen many benefits from change, but still many argue that school uniforms are not necessary and shouldn’t be required. Public schools should have school uniforms because they decrease violence, help students focus on academics, and help promote school safety. An argument many proponents for school uniforms make is that school uniforms reduce the presence of crime and violence in schools. According to the article, "School Dress Codes Are Necessary and Constitutional." by Stephen Daniels, a study conducted by the NAESP says that principals of schools with uniform policies believe that students are more focused on studies as well as other beneficial outcomes. The study says that one of the effects principals saw was “67 percent saw an improvement in student concentration” (Daniels). School uniforms are helping students focus and put more effort into their work. The U.S Department of Education has also noticed the great effect that uniforms have. In their publication “Manual on School Uniforms” that was instructed to be sent out to every school district in the United States by President Bill Clinton, they listed many benefits of school uniforms. One major benefit they mentioned was “helping students concentrate on academics” (Daniels). The evidence clearly states that uniforms help students focus on their work. According to a study conducted and released by the Harvard School of Education found that “Long Beach school district was among six of the districts in the nation 34 largest cities that dramatically reduced their dropout rates. During the past five years, dropout rates have declined from 11.2 to 2.7 percent” (Daniels). If the school's climate is improving, than obviously kids are working harder and improving as well.
