Should Socialism Be Implemented in the US? A wise man once said if you give a man a fish you will feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish you will feed him for a lifetime. I think this quote can relate to the reason why socialism should not be implemented in the United States. Socialism consists of giving people lots of free things and I believe that if you teach someone to be self-sufficient than you will not have to give them so many things. I will explain why Socialism is damaging, unneeded and inefficient. The first main problem of Socialism is that it doesn’t recognize incentives and instead ignores them. This means that if something is scarce than the price will rise to tell the consumers that this product is scarce. This might seem like a bad thing because the prices are higher but you will avoid having a shortage of the product, which is far worse. In the 1970’s OPEC restricted the supply of oil, gas prices rose dramatically. The higher prices transmitted that the supply of gas was scarce so people changed their behavior by carpooling, riding pikes and using public transit, so there is no need to control prices. On the contrary, there was another time in the United States when gas was scarce and prices rose. But instead of letting the problem solve itself, the government controlled the price of gas. As a result long lines formed at the gas stations and gas stations began to run out of gas because the gas was scarce at the time. So under the price regulating policies of Socialism there becomes a misunderstanding of how scarce a product is.
