It is often debated whether state and community college should be tuition free. However, this is not a black and white question. Some argue that neither should be free; however, the opinion that would be the most logical would be that community college should be tuition-free and state, 4 year colleges, should still have tuition but the price should be cheaper. State college is a premium education and has lots of value and shouldn’t just be given away. If you don't pay for your education, others will have to causing taxes to rise. When they view resumes, respectable and well known colleges stand out and they hire those before community college and so if someone had the money they would go to a state college to aim for higher success. The cost of state college is already extremely pricey and Americans hate taxes at the rate they are now. If students at state colleges don't have to pay for their tuition and it becomes free, the government would pay. The cost of state college is high and so there would be an enormous inflation on taxes. Community college isn’t that good of a higher education and it wouldn’t have too much of an effect on taxes if it was free because it is already a cheaper option for those who have financial struggles. It also has a greater dropout rate than state colleges because those with financial struggles work numerous jobs to try and pay and then run out of time and energy. “Community colleges face question about low retention rates (only one-in-five full-time students complete their two-year degree within three years of entering…and often, the quality of their instruction…” (D). This shows how community college isn’t top notch. College is supposed to be premium extra education (which it is at state) and community college just is an extra education geared more towards labor intensive jobs or educational jobs, it is only 2 years and it wont give you anything like a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
