But if a student were able tp find a job that worked with their schedule, it would hectic. They already have practice and college classes that they are required to attend. Combined, they take up about 60 hours a week. Add a job into the mix, and the student athlete now has no free time, is always busy, and exhausted 24/7. In some people’s opinion, this is too much for anyone to take on and we should give these collegiate athletes some slack and be able to pay them.

Although there are many things that they can not receive because the NCAA has made it illegal, there are still many things that student athletes can receive from their school or boosters. Student athletes are allowed to receive gifts under certain circumstances. Under NCAA rules players are allowed to receive postseason awards worth up to $550. A postseason award is defined by the NCAA as a gift from a bowl game. So essentially, if a team makes a bowl game, all of them are able to receive up $550 in gifts from whomever is hosting the bowl game. Players can earn more rewards from their school from superior performance such as most improved player, most minutes played, team MVP, and many more. There are many ways they can legally be paid by their universities but there are are many more ways they can receive gifts illegally. A small number of athletes get caught every year and a small number of those who were caught have claimed that it wasn’t just them, it was the whole team who was receiving benefits illegally. Cam Newton was accused of doing so in 2010. “Cam Newton spent much of the 2010 season dogged by NCAA allegation that Newton’s father had demanded $180,000 from Mississippi State in exchange for his son to play there” (Ford). Some athletes also try to get money by selling game memorabilia for large amounts of money.
