Student athletes are allowed to receive gifts under certain circumstances. Under NCAA rules players are allowed to receive postseason awards worth up to $550. A postseason award is defined by the NCAA as a gift from a bowl game. Cam Newton was accused of doing so in 2010. “Cam Newton spent much of the 2010 season dogged by NCAA allegation that Newton’s father had demanded $180,000 from Mississippi State in exchange for his son to play there” (Ford). Some athletes also try to get money by selling game memorabilia for large amounts of money.
