Should Teachers be Tenured? Merriam Dictionary defines tenure: as a status granted after a trial period to a teacher that gives protection from dismissal. Schools all around the country are making the process for teachers to become tenured a lot easier and faster. Yes, the system of picking new teachers is under more review and harsher processes, it doesn't always mean they select the perfect teachers. Although there are teachers that deserve to be tenured and put their effort into teaching but since the time to become tenured is so short, it makes it difficult to actually know if they (teachers) are good at their jobs and if they aren’t good at their job it calls for lots of money and time to get them fired. Allowing teachers to be tenured so soon is a positive for the school systems. Although it is said to be rare to actually find a fired tenured teacher it is still possible, the numbers are also possibly so low due to the high fees that are necessary for the grueling process. It must be done to help their schools, “schools districts have spent an average of $219,504.21 in legal fees for dismissal cases,” which can lead to other troubles for the school districts having to spend so much (Reeder). Since school some school districts already struggle with costs for things like desks or better chairs the thought of even spending that much on firing a teacher seems crazy, “always the possibility that the school district may have to cut some program that benefits children, just to pay for the cost of firing a teacher.” (Reeder). These costs should really make districts want to change the amount of time till a teacher is tenured so schools don’t have to face such financials
