For my research topic, I decided to research why teachers should be paid more and what factors go into how much they get paid in the United States. Have you ever asked yourself how much teachers get paid, are they underpaid more than other professions ? The answer is they are not paid enough for the work they do molding the young minds of this generation in my opinion. For the importance of their job the United States does not fund public education from tax dollars enough causing teachers to not show interest or leave their jobs. What factors go into their pay, does having a higher teaching degree help them get paid more or why do private schools get higher pay, these are just some of the questions that I will be answering today in this essay. …show more content…

Why are teachers so underpaid for the important work that they do? Well there are several reasons why such as budget cuts, not enough funding in their education system, or also low priority when it comes to funding. Around roughly 20 percent of teachers that work in public schools have to work second jobs to be able to support their families and themselves. According to "Teachers have it easy" “ A 2004 survey from the Texas University found that 35% of teachers were working more than two jobs in the summer”. Teachers should not have to undergo that type of stress just to make ends meet for themselves or their families. For teachers that are working in public schools in lower tax based areas get less funding leading to teachers with less experience and then getting paid less than other teachers in better funded areas. This doesn't benefit anyone, not the students or teachers who are being severely underpaid. Teachers who are also in underfunded schools often have to take on a larger class size than others and also since they get a lower budget for school supplies they often end up paying out of pocket just so their students have the basic supplies. Often people are drawn away from this rewarding career because of the hard work and little pay they receive for the work they do. According to the CTC or also known as the California commission on Teacher Credentialing there are roughly 10,000 un-occupied teaching positions across the country. This could result in there being a teacher shortage and with the lack of teachers in school this will only cause more problems for the teachers already at school. Leading to them getting more work or larger class sizes causing more responsibility ,with little to no raise or extra
