After breaking ties with the British government, the colonies had a new found independence and needed a system that unified the states and created a strong form of government. The Articles of Confederation were written in 1777 as a loose organization in which majority of the power were given to the states and put into effect in 1781. However, problems arose within the Articles that caused the colonists to doubt its effectiveness. The state delegates revised the document and created the Constitution which had many changes and little remained the same.
When the thirteen colonies declared their independence from Britain, they no longer had a government or authority to rule. So, the Articles of Confederation was created and became the first constitution to govern the United States. This plan was created in order to organize the nation and fight the Revolutionary War for independence. The Articles of Confederation had many weaknesses such as the government only had one branch that only created laws and did not have branches to execute, interpret, or enforce the laws. As a result, the Confederation failed the nation and it was abolished then a new constitution was created entitled the U.S Constitution.
The Articles of Confederation, written in 1776, were the foundation to a war-based government. At the time of the drafting this was deemed necessary, but years later, it became a burden on the States. A few select men were tasked with the editing of the Articles, to make them more sustainable to the 'modern' times of 1787. However, those men chose to drop the Articles of Confederation completely in favor of a new, improved Constitution.

Debt became a big problem after the war when the federal government attempted to pay off the debt by asking the states to help pay their share of the bill.

Since most colonies had taken more care of their own individual interests, it had been much easier to agree upon and form state institutions. Rather than focusing on the importance of the growth of a strong united but yet equally independent structure for their own national gorvernment.
As it applies to the Articles of Confederation there were many weaknesses in the way it went about governing the United States. For one, the loose federation of the states was too weak to act as a foundation to be considered or act as a central government. In addition the state legislatures had too much power and in turn had the ability to influence economic issues of all kinds. This strong legislature is the same one that allowed for mob ruling and actions by debtors. The Articles of confederation were also weak because the required congress to have all 13 colonies in agreement when a new tax was to be passed.

After years and years of being under the influence of the British, the people wanted their own form of government that they can personally call theirs. When the colonists were still with Great Britain, King George III misused his power. As a result, colonists wrote the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, to the king, to state their separation from Great Britain, to form a new country, the United States of America. After creating a new country, Americans wrote the Articles of Confederation in the year 1777, which they purposely weakened central government, so the abuse of power, wouldn’t exist. This meant the states had all the power. Although this structure of government seemed great, the creators of the Articles quickly realized that with no central government, states weren’t united because they were busy on increasing the growth of only their state.
This lead to the exclusion of taxation powers in the federal government, meaning they had very little money to pay their large debt from the war, pay the soldiers for their service, or even just run the government. Under the Articles of Confederation, Congress was only able to simply request money from the states, of course the states rarely met these requests, which left the federal government with very little money and very little power overall. After the American Revolutionary War, the United States had a large debt to many different countries and was now unable to pay it off because it raised virtually no money under the Articles of Confederation. Also, the states and Congress shared the right to coin money and regulate said money. Currency was overprinted and created an economic crisis due to the inflation caused from the shared power of printing the currency.
The Articles of Confederation had created a basic foundation for the government, but the Constitution had expanded the government further, trying to help alleviate the problems. The Constitution gave the national and state governments the power of levying taxes on the citizens to pay off the debt. The idea that was created came for the government "to pay for its significant expenditures during the Revolution[.] Congress had two options: print more money or obtain loans to meet the budget deficit. In practice it did both, but relied more on the printing of money, which led to hyperinflation" (US Department of State "U.S. Debt and Foreign Loans, 1775–1795").
The Article of Confederation was made to create a sense of structure in the government of America and advance the economy, resulting in a place where one can be proud to be a part of. The Article of Confederation exhibited lots of weaknesses, including different national governance, financial instability due to inefficient tax collection, and a lack of central authority. thus addressed and corrected by the US Constitution, creating a strong federal government and providing a strong framework for the economy to come. With the constitution they created federalism or shared power between the states and the government, they created this to make sure the government or states don't overpower on another. The Federal system was made up of three types of government powers, these are reserved, enumerated, and concurrent powers.
The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.
