The Satanic Verses is a novel written by Salman Rushdie in 1988 that sparked a lot of controversy. The book portrays the prophet Muhammad as a disgusting, dirty, lying, perverted hypocrite and portrays Allah as a frightening monster with claws and horns. Rushdie gives Muhammad's wives the names of prostitutes in his novel and the very title itself is offensive towards Muslims. Muslims consider Mohammad to be a loving and courageous man. Therefore, not only were these statements in the novel insulting but untrue as well. Rushdie was slammed by muslims with death threats and he went into hiding to escape the controversy. Many have suggested banning the book since it is abhorrent and disrespectful towards Islam and the muslim religion. The Satanic verses infringes this rule since the characteristics of Mohammad and the names of the prophets wives were changed. Salman Rushdie must have known these statements were untrue while writing the book and he must have been certain that it would cause a controversy which is another violation of section 181 of the criminal code. Publishing a book with hatred towards a specific group is clearly hate crime. He obviously is hostile against Muslims or else he would never write this book. Therefore, it can be logical to come to the conclusion that he was aware publishing The Satanic Verses would cause mischief and misconduct. All of these assertions make it apparant that section 181 has been violated hence why The Satanic Verses should be
