The book, The Handmaid’s Tale should not be banned because it teaches and has taught many students good lessons and the banning of this book would be unfair as many other books raise the same red flags and aren’t banned. This issue is important in many ways because books are much more than just a form of entertainment. Books give us access to skills and knowledge that is otherwise unavailable in many other forms. Books teach us lessons, ad build up our creativity in order to think and interpret things for ourselves. This idea of banning books is also such a huge issue because it's discouraging the whole idea of freedom of thought and speech for students. The main reasoning for banning The Handmaid’s Tale is mainly because of profanity, sexuality, violence, and being anti-christianty. Even though many other books contain most if not all of these red flags and are still allowed. Books such as Huckleberry finn by Mark Twain, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Brave New World Aldous Huxley are not banned. Each one of these books contain an element that is a red flag or something that raises concern. However these books aren’t banned in our system even though they raise the concern of racism, profanity, sexuality, and drug abuse. If the idea of banning The Handmaid’s Tale is pushed, then why not push the banning of every book that raises similar concerns. A book like Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is one sharing very similar concerns as The Handmaid’s Tale and it is still yet to be banned in our system. Brave New World actually raises more concerns such as drug abuse and promiscuosity. Along with both Huckleberry finn by Mark Twain, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee raising and it's explixit use of profain and racist lanuage and ideas. So then the question becomes why not ban all of these books if The Handmaid’s Tale should be banned for raising concerns? What makes The Handmaid’s Tale so much worse than the rest? However in The Handmaid’s Tale these may not be optimal for readers, they do serve a purpose. Something that is often times overlooked in this debate is the purpose of these topics of concern are to exaggerate and prove a much more effective theme. Although it can be argued these topics of concern are bad for students, it could also be said that they also allow the students to take in greater message overall. Through the use of this language and using such topics that bring concern the author was able to create such a strange broken society. Now although this society is portrayed as society with bad morals and lots of mistreatment, this allows the reader to to appreciate the work the characters such as Offred put in to stand up for the life they desire and to rebel against a poorly constructed society. This message is much more useful and allows students to interpret the message for themselves and implicate it into their own lives. What should be taken into consideration is the use of such topics of concern in each book, and whether or not the intent is to harm students. The Hadnmaid’s Tale uses many points of concern to portray a society that characters are able to make the best of and fight for their rights. So justification for banning a book should reach beyond just surface-level concerns and actually address the intent and
