Should The Kite Runner be read in school? Why or why not? Analyze the literary merit of the book and why it should be taught in schools OR the reasons you think the book should not be explicitly taught in class.

[Hook] Kahled Hosseini’s book The Kite Runner follows the main character Amir throughout his childhood and into adulthood, and his struggles with his past. The setting is Kabul, Afghanistan from the 1960s to the early ’70s, and then moves to America in the ‘80s into the early 2000s. This should be read in high schools because it deals with very mature topics that teenagers should learn to talk about and process, includes many examples of literary devices, and uses a narrative to teach about guilt and forgiveness in a way that builds empathy. …show more content…

Assef and his two friends beat Hassan up before Assef rapes him, to strip him of his power while Sohrab attempts suicide because he feels powerless (75-77, 343). Reading about this topic in school takes a high maturity level and talking about this in a classroom setting helps students learn about it and realize the painful reality of sexual assault. Because of the maturing mind in high school, it is important to learn more about issues like this and be exposed to the reality of hopelessness that may exist for survivors of assault. If not exposed to topics such as this, they would not likely develop as well emotionally as they would have if the school provided discussions on the content. The use of power in this book is a big point because power if someone possesses it, can be used for many different reasons. By reading this story, students will learn how much of an influence power has over
