Transgender Athletes Debate Hello everyone. My name is Erika Casinelli. My partner Emma and I are supporting the following topic: “Resolved: if a transgender person has fully or partially transitioned, and they want to play sports, they should play on the team of the gender to which they are transitioning.” We support this statement for many reasons, including: they want to be fully considered by other people as the gender that they switched to, professional sports leagues allow transgenders to be drafted, and the physical ability of individuals are always different, so not all transgenders would have an advantage. A very indispensable value is that all individuals are diverse in many ways, and they should all be treated equitably. Many people claim that transgenders being on the team of their transitioned gender is unfair and discriminatory because of their athletic advantage, however, this does not apply to every single transgender. For example, if a girl is transitioning to a boy, or considers themselves as a boy, they technically would not have an advantage on the boy’s team because males just naturally had a stronger body than females, so it does not apply to them. According to ThinkProgress, “In a sense, conservatives claiming that trans people would have an advantage is not only wrong (because the science on hormones says they’re wrong), but also uniquely transphobic. It implies that trans people’s bodies should have to be policed when other athletes’ are not, regardless of what physical advantages they might innately have” (Ford).
