Nickolas Swanson English 9D Oct. 10 2014 Should we celebrate Zheng He or Columbus? Zheng He was a Chinese explorer who led one of the largest and greatest fleets in history. His voyages should be celebrated because of the hard work he put into his explorations. He figured out a way to communicate with his 300 treasure fleet ships, and his 27,000 crew members. He led seven voyages throughout his life with each one being successful. Zheng He bought culture and artifacts around the world and changed history so much that without him, we wouldn’t be the same today. Zheng He’s explorations should celebrated throughout the world since his explorations expanded across many cultures. Zheng He’s treasure fleet is the largest of any explorers. I think it is important for us to remember how many ships he had to navigate and command. He is only one voice and there are 300 ships he had to communicate with. Zheng He’s ships were large enough to fit plenty of animals on them. Zheng He had the ability to fit huge animals onto his ships such as horses, rhinoceroses, and elephants, and even giraffes. He had a lot more space to store goods and resources than other explorers had and that is important since he could bring more items back to china than he would if he had smaller ships. Zheng He’s crew consisted of 27,000 crew members, all of which had specific roles that contributed to his expeditions. His crew included doctors, fortune-tellers, cooks, sail makers, servants, and more. This is good because if one of his sails were to break, the sail maker could just make him another one.
