We should characterize Columbus and his legacy positively. Columbus was an intelligent person who had a good effect on the Americas. His voyages (indirectly) started the Columbian Exchange, which had mostly positive effects on both America and Europe. He was a (mainly, because nobody is perfect) good person, and should be credited for it. Columbus played a big part in shaping our country, which is a very important aspect when characterizing a person. This is our home, and it would be very different if Columbus hadn’t come here. We might not have had contact with the Europeans, Africans, or Asians if Columbus hadn’t created the relationship between the Eastern and Western hemispheres. Even though others may have found America, too, they might not have done what he did. Bjarni found America by accident, but he just came and left, not taking anyone or anything with him, not leaving any big marks behind. If Columbus had never come, then our society would probably contain all Native American aspects. We wouldn’t have all of the diverse cultures and backgrounds that we have now, because nobody with diverse cultures and/or backgrounds would even know about America, let alone come here.
