Do you think young athletes should receive a trophy just for simply showing up ? According to the "Trophies For All" policy, young athletes are being rewarded with participation trophies . It is time young athletes realize not everyone gets a trophy . Supporters of trophies state they motivate kids to play, but research shoes that extrinsic motivation is harmful not helpful . Also the money that is used for getting trophies can be better spent for other purposes . Getting trophies for showing up teaches the wrong idea of getting rewarded for nothing . Many organizations spend thousands of dollars that can be better used for other purposes. A better way this money can be used is for better educating coaches . When you better coaches, you better the kids so that they can actually receive a first place trophy . Money on participation trophies have many other reasons to be spent, as argued in "Do We Need Participation Awards?" Getting trophies for showing up teaches the wrong idea of getting rewarded for doing nothing . Also research shows that extrinsic motivation on it's own can be harmful not helpful . You don't reward kids for showing up to practices and games , you reward kids for doing their best and eventually winning . If you ask most kids what you got rewarded for most of them probably wouldn't know . Kids should not be rewarded for doing anything less than the best . This is in the CNN Parent Facebook Page . Supporters state that not everyone is a winner, but the trophy acknowledges that the kids put their time and effort into getting a trophy.
