Show dogs are dogs that are specifically bred and trained to meet the expectations of conformation shows.
Training of show dogs begins with its health. In order for a dog to be a show dog it must be fit for function. As stated by The Kennel Club “ every dog, even if it’s function is solely to be a pet, should be able to see, breathe, and walk freely (” With dog shows grading by perfection all of the dogs entered must make health a main priority before any show. When the dog is cleared with perfect health the handler should take its canine to attend Ringcraft classes for extensive training. The Kennel Club states that “Ringcraft clubs are usually very sociable, where groups of like-minded people meet on a regular basis and get great enjoyment from training their dogs.” These classes …show more content…

There are a wide variety of dogs that are considered show dogs so they’re broken down into seven groups by characteristics and functions. The terrier group includes the West Highland White Terrier, “these dogs was developed in the Highlands of Scotland for the hard and dangerous work of destroying vermin.” Although Terriers hunt they’re not categorized as working dogs. Working category includes many dogs like the Bullmastiff. Their jobs include guarding homes, serving as police and military dogs, special service dogs and hunters. Not all working dogs are put in the working category. The herding category includes the Berganasco Sheepdog these dogs are in charge of gathering and moving livestock on farms. They’re workers just like hounds but are put in their own group. The hounds category includes the Cirneco Dell’etna this group consists of scent hounds who hunt by tracking a scent and sight hounds who hunt be sight.
