Groups who demand change to government policies and decisions are called pressure groups. There are many pressure groups, following the interests of economics, religion, health, human rights, or the environment. But are any of these groups successful? One environmental group that has made many accomplishments is Sierra Club BC.
In 1969, Sierra Club BC was formed by Sierra Club US. Sierra Club US came to British Columbia to determine whether anyone was interested enough to start a Sierra Club within the province. As the answer was yes, people who were current or formal members of the Sierra Club US, established the Sierra Club of British Columbia, though without the permission from the head of Sierra Club US. For the next 48 years, Sierra Club BC makes an impact on protecting the environment.

The Sierra Club BC has dealt with this situation a handful of times. One example is in 2007, where the BC government was pressured to target carbon emissions reductions. In result, the first carbon tax in North America was successfully introduced. Another example from 2011 includes forcing the BC government to legislate a ban on mining and energy development in Flathead River Valley. Others involve the protection of trees in the Central Walbran. Organizing campaigns, involving the media, and including scientific facts are the factors to success for Sierra Club BC.
Over the past few years, Sierra Club BC has been successfully making a difference throughout the province of BC. With the help of volunteers and communities around, awareness about the environment and how the government treats it is made clear. Media coverage is also at use, spreading the word to more than just a community.
