The Civil War. Louis P. Masur’s book, The civil War: a Concise History, Is a book that gives an overview of the civil war from 18 to 1800, Providing multiple causes an consequences that emerged from the war. The book begins by reviewing the origins of the war. Chapter one covers the issues between northern and southern states and the tension over right and slave possession. The tension created a conflict that raised a number of political, social, and military events that then proceeded into a battle to abolish slavery from the colonies.
Charles B. Dew argued in his book “Southern Secession Commissioners and the Cause of the Civil War” that the south seceded to protect the slaves. He also stated the north had larger military forces compared to the south. That southerners fought because of their pride and that is why the war lasted for four years (322). Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana wanting to get out of the Union and become one of their own. The lower southern states persuaded many other slave state to secede from the Union as well.
When he stumbled upon General Lee’s battle plans for Antietam, McClellan boasted that he had intel that insured Lee’s defeat and would return soon from a swift victory. However, he still believed his forces were outnumbered and, rather than hastily move to attack before Lee could completely settle his troops, McClellan waited eighteen hours before engaging. This delay provided Lee’s small forces the time they needed to learn of McClellan’s knowledge, readjust and call in reinforcements. Once the battle had begun, McClellan’s inability to control his troops was vastly evident. His headquarters were too far back to effectively control the battle, and his reinforcements were staged too far behind to provide any real assistant to the troops that were actively engaged in battle.
The union were able to attack Lees center multiple times but McClellan let the rebels retreat and regroup. Which let the battle carry on longer than needed. Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson (January 21, 1824 – May 10, 1863) was a Confederate general during the American Civil War, and the best-known Confederate commander after General Robert E. Lee. His military career includes the Valley Campaign of 1862 and his service as a corps commander in the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee. Confederate pickets accidentally shot him at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863. The general survived with the loss of an arm to amputation, but died of complications from pneumonia eight days later. His death was a severe setback for the Confederacy, affecting not only its military prospects, but also the morale of its army and of the general public.
During the Battle of Oak Grove, General McClellan’s goal was to reach high ground to gain a height advantage. The thick woods of Oak Grove became the unofficial line that separated both sides of the conflict. Another of General McClellan’s goal was to secure the Richmond and York River Railroad to be able to secure a faster supply line and to have the ability to move his siege guns up to put more pressure on Richmond. General Sickles of the Union Army pushed through Oak Grove and was able to drive the Confederates from York Railroad. Less than two hours after the beginning of the battle, General McClellan calls for his forces to cease movement and moves his command post to the front.
Even though the Confederate army was outnumbered, they were smart and great at defending Vicksburg. In April 1863, Grant made a smart move when he made a surprise landing at Bruinsburg with the Union troops. Then they moved quickly up and pushed back Joseph E. Johnson and his troops who were near Jackson. When Grant was done there, he set his eyes right back at Vicksburg.
As you know being in an army could be quite difficult for soldiers. Both Union soldiers and Confederate soldiers train everyday and do certain duties to get ready for the American Civil War. However, there are huge differences between the two armies. Before the war started, most of the soldiers from both North and South had been farmers. If the Southerners did not farm they either became carpenters, mechanics, merchants, machinist, lawyers, teachers, blacksmiths, or a dentist.
Union General Irvin McDowell believed his army of 35,000 would be able to defeat Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard’s 20,000, but the Confederates managed to hold him off while reinforcements arrived. Eventually the Confederates retreated upwards to Henry House Hill, where Confederate General Thomas Jackson got his troops ready to meet the Union advance (“Bull Run” 1). By 1 PM, many Union soldiers had been fighting for ten hours in addition to having marched six miles before the battle. Then Confederate backups began to arrive and by 2 PM began a counter attack. However, it ended in confusion because units on both sides shared uniforms of the same color and style.

People don 't like change in their lives and when something is changed that fight to see it back to what it was before.
