This quote from chapter 8 perfectly sums up what Chris McCandless actually, not courageous adventure Krakauer presents him to be in his book “Into the wild”. Chris McCandless is a reckless narcissist whose own hubris got him killed in a ridiculous attempt to survive in the Alaskan wilderness. In his deplorable attempt to run away from his personal life, McCandless went without any basic survival gear or knowledge, and got himself killed. Some may argue that McCandless was courageous, even though that is somewhat true, it's outweighed by his recklessness. Although Chris managed to survive 119 days in his Alaskan journey, his own unpreparedness got him killed. If Chris had even a marginal amount of the gear he needed, he might have survived. Krakauer states in chapter 18 that there was a cable car Chris's side of the river that would help delivered him across the Teklanika. Chris did not know about the cable car because he didn't have a map. It's obvious that Chris would have had a map, he could have crossed the river safety when he ran out of food, and he could have lived. Chris’s own ignorance was another factor in his downfall. Alkaloid producing mold is what finally did Chris in. However, Chris did not know about this and continue to eat the infected potato seeds. Ignorance is what killed Chris among other things.
