In the novel, Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes, the reader is presented with the main character, Johnny, a fourteen-year-old silversmith apprentice to Mr. Lapham, the master smith of the Lapham house, in the time of the Revolutionary War. Throughout the book, this character is portrayed as prideful and arrogant.
In the book “ Johnny Tremain” written by Esther Forbes, the theme pride really stands out in the beginning of the book. In this book, it repeatedly shows pride as a bad thing. Pride is one of the few things in the world that isn’t just good or evil. Pride is only evil if you let it become more important than everything else. This is a quote by C.Lewis “ pride is a spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, contentment, or even common sense,’”
Cheerful Beings in a World of Darkness Stephen, Matsu, and Sachi all have suffering in a world of hate, violence, and broken hearts thus forming a bond. Stephen even becomes “the musuko we lost so many years ago” (205). This bond is shown throughout the novel The Samurai’s Garden, by Gail Tsukiyama. It is a realistic fiction novel. The pressures and suffering vary between for example Sachi has massive pressure to honor her family by killing herself due to contracting leprosy.

Doon Harow from the novel, City Of Ember is not how he seems and is not a hero. The first reason Doon isn't a hero is because he has a bad temper and can get angry very easily. In the City Of Ember, when you are 13, the mayor comes to the class and then you draw a card from a bag containing the job you will have for the rest of your life. While most people either get the job they want or the one they don’t, none of them show disgrace and have a bad temper, until it’s Doons turn. The author stated; “He scowled, crumpled the paper and dashed it to the floor”.

In the novel, The Samurai’s Garden, Gail Tsukiyama portrays the same idea through the character, Sachi who is an old woman with leprosy. Sachi becomes friend with Matsu, a house caretaker of the main character. Later on, she befriends Michiko, another woman with the same disease.
People around the world don’t realize the stance of perseverance and how it is used in everyday life for many. Perseverance is persistence in doing something no matter what may happen or get in your way of succeeding. In the memoir, The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls presents the stars and Venus as symbolism in order to unveil the amount of perseverance there shall be taken in life, ultimately illustrating that despite any hardship, you keep pushing through. At the beginning of "Inherit the Wind" by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the character Matthew Harrison Brady is introduced as a very praised, well-respected man, an experienced politician and a fundamentalist that has very strong religious views. But as the trial continues, Brady loses a lot of his pride and confidence because of his experiences throughout the play. He lost most of his supporters that adored and admired him. At the beginning, the townspeople of Hillsboro, who view him as a hero defending their beliefs, welcomed with admiration, respect and approval from Brady. This is especially true when Brady first arrives in Hillsboro and meets everyone in the town.

His journey is a great example of determination because he was able to overcome every obstacle he encountered and be in charge of his own life and decisions. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the ghost of King Hamlet appears to warn his son, Prince Hamlet, of his uncle Claudius' evil doings. King Hamlet creates both fear and rage in his son sending him to spiral out of control throughout the play. Through the years, many film adaptations of the play have been created in which each version interprets the play in different ways.
One of these examples is, after he is kicked out of school he still continues to learn from books in the library. This shows that he will not give up on his education. Furthermore, when William is building his windmill people in the village think he is crazy, and they mock him constantly. But he does not let that stop him, he just uses it as fuel to keep going.
