1984, published in 1948 by George Orwell, is a partner read to Fahrenheit 451, published in 1951 by Ray Bradbury. Both books are wonderful works of literature set in the dystopian future with many similarities, but also subtle differences scattered throughout the novels. Although 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 are very similar stories they have many differences such as the characters, the government, and the ideas on war. In 1984 the main character, Winston Smith, has a very rebellious mindset. Winston is a freethinker who would enjoy to see “Big Brother” fall. He begins acting on these thoughts when he meets Julia, who also hates the strict government.Winston and Julia join an underground group of the citizens who wish to overthrow the government, called the Brotherhood. Montag is a fireman. Unlike firemen today, the firemen in Fahrenheit 451 were to burn books. Montag meets a young girl named Clarisse who throughout the book is compared to light. Clarisse is different from anyone Montag has ever met. She taught him to look for the beauty in everything and to consider how things affect him. Without Clarisse, Montag would be married to his brainless wife, Mildred, and working at the fire station burning books. Montag fights for his dream of an intelligent society. He finally finds a group of free thinking people outside of the town limits and joins them in watching his home being blown up in warfare. Montag does not stray from his ideal society and it pays off. The government in Fahrenheit 451 is not against free thinkers but does keep tabs on the citizens.
