Imagine a world left without thought, creativity, and a brainwashed society that can no longer think for themselves. This kind of misshapen society becomes formed in the novels Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and 1984 by George Orwell. In Fahrenheit 451, a fireman named Guy Montag tries to turn a society run by technology towards books and the ability to think the unimaginable. In 1984, a man named Winston Smith goes against the controlling government that controls the society into making everyone live a blatant life and vaporized anyone with the slightest hint of rebellion. The novels portray the idea that the overpowerment of something can create a blatant world that everybody conforms to, but Bradbury uses the controlling ability of technology and Orwell uses the government. This both happens in Fahrenheit 451 with technology and 1984 with the totalitarian government. In Fahrenheit 451, citizens are controlled by technology and think books are just a source of evil. They think that the firemen are a helpful cause in society while “[the] firemen provide a circus… and crowds gather for the pretty blaze.” (Bradbury 83). The society is practically brainwashed into believing that destruction is a beautiful sight to see, practically leading to the wars they cause. This type of behavior of having entertainment from destruction occurs in 1984 also. Many of the civilians are in love with going to the hangings and seeing the death of people who have wronged the government. Those that did rebel the government had to live in fear of having “[their] one time existence [being] denied and then forgotten.” (Orwell 19).The government became so powerful and stubborn that it basically made everyone conform to become what they believe is right, vaporizing anyone that decides to follow their own
