Knights have always fascinated people with their daring deeds and good manners. In the Pearl Poet’s “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” the Green Knight arrives at King Arthur’s castle to Challenge his Knights, but no one accepts the challenge until finally, Arthur stands up. Eventually, Sir Gawain accepts the challenge and has his reputation challenged along the way. When Sir Gawain became a knight, he promised to live by the Code of Chivalry just like I live my life by a set of rules. My code of honor shares similarities with the Code of Chivalry.
Beowulf showed courage when he decided to fight Grendel with his bare hands, and stated that god would decide who the victor would be. Beowulf said this by saying “ That I alone with the help of my men, may purge all evil from this hall. …….. god must decide who will be given to death’s cold grip. Sir Gawain showed courage by following through with the challenge with the Green knight .
Why, in medieval times, did knights so foolishly jump at any opportunity to die for their king? The answer to this question is not so foolish; it is called the code of chivalry. This code is the “rule book” for knights, the standards that they must live up to. These customs include three major ideas; strength, courage, and honor. The first of these, strength, involves protecting the weak and defenseless.
There was once a time where knights were meant to be the epitome of chivalry; they symbolized honor, courage, justice and much more. However, not every knight matched the narrative of what a true knight should be. One way to teach people a certain value is through exemplary texts such as, “The wedding of King Arthur”. This story uses the knights and their actions to instruct the reader to be honorable by punishing the, shameful, dishonorable knights while rewarding the true and honorable one hence, guiding the reader towards a more honorable path. Sir Gawain does not show mercy to a defeated foe and is punished for it.
Meaning through Juxtaposition in “The Miller’s Tale” “I can a noble tale for the nones/With which I wol now quite the Knightes tale … if I misspeke or saye/Wite it the ale of Southwerk, I you praye” (Chaucer 18-19, 31-32); so the Miller prefaces his tale. Told immediately after the Knight’s elevated narrative, this bawdy and amoral farce is presented as a challenging “quite” (response) to its predecessor. The Canterbury Tales depicts the differing levels of society of the Medieval period. The tales with the most notable differences are “The Pardoner’s Tale” and “The Reeve’s Tale.” The former story is about three men consumed by greed, which ultimately leads them to their h. The latter tale is about two clerks who seek revenge on a miller who steals grain from their school. “The Pardoner’s Tale” and “The Reeve’s Tale” drastically differ in their moral themes that depict revenge, sin, and greed. “The Pardoner’s Tale” illustrates the effects of revenge, sin, and greed.
The test of knighthood Each day something new is learned, whether it be school work or life lessons. For example a dog learning to fetch or a student getting penalized because of plagiarism. Epics give us an understanding of what the people of that time could think of. Throughout history stories have been told to show people life lessons and morals. That was all they had back then. A perfect example is the epic Sir Gawain and the Green knight.
With each tale, there are different events that occur in order to reach the main topic of these tales. Within the Knight’s Tale, the Wife of Bath’s Tale, and the Pardoner's Tale, Chaucer does a phenomenal job in having these tales represent the societal problems of his era. Geoffrey Chaucer uses the Knight’s Tale to explains how love can corrupt the trust between two cousins. The knight is telling the story of Palamon and Arcita, two prisoners of wars that are locked up in a prison in the city of Athens. One day, the two look outside the prison window and see a fair young lady called, Emily.
For instance, it is one of the only tales that revolves around men. There is mentioning of women, but as Kruger explains it, "... women are evoked only to be excluded" (129). The absence of women suggests infertility, and thus, projects literary barrenness. Moreover, Kruger believes that the relationship between the three men is a parody of the sworn brotherhood and heterosexual love triangles found in the Knight's Tale, which also disturbs the heterosexual model of writing. Chaucer, with this tale, intended to show the dangers of the attachment to the physical and the disregard for spiritual, allegorical interpretation.
The knights do everything right and they follow the rules. I think that you should believe in yourself and don 't care what nobody else thinks. The knight go by Gods rules and they follow them strictly and do everything Gods says I think that you are living by honor when you follow Gods rules strictly . I think that you are living by glory when you do your own thing and you don 't let nobody tell you that you cannot do something because anything is possible .The
(Chaucer 45-60). Chaucer gives the knight genuine praise to show the virtuous qualities he possesses. Similarly, Chaucer uses the knight in “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” to show the importance of honor. The knight shows honor when he promises the queen that he will find what women most desire, “In the end he chose to go away / And to return after a year and a day / Armed with such answer / As there might be sent to him by god” (Chaucer, 91-94).
The two stories have a main focus of explaining morals in a hidden way. Both stories express more than one moral and it gives the reader a sense of what Chaucer is trying to express. “The Pardoners’s Tale” Is a better story because of its relatible moral that focuses on greed, and its multiple uses of figurative language and irony. The medieval period was mostly about staying true to god and making sure you didn’t commit any of the seven deadly sins.
Throughout the book William never gave up, and part of that reason was that he never let criticism get to him. He just used it as motive to work
Stories contain many characters with some that stand out more than the others. A person is considered the protagonist depending on who is telling the story and what story is being told. The protagonist is the main character in a literary work. Whether good or evil, the audience sympathize with the protagonist and understands the motif of the character. Beowulf is a protagonist whose encounters with evil proves him to be a strong heroic warrior.
