INTRODUCTION Have you ever learned about two of the most important men in the history of America? Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. both made their mark on America in many different ways. Martin Luther King, Jr. made sure the civil rights movement was on top of America's agenda by giving his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. King was not the only man that impacted the civil rights movement. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in the 1800’s and made it possible for these men to fight for their rights. EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION Abraham Lincoln was born to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln on February 12, 1809. Abe had two siblings, his older sister Sarah and a younger brother named Thomas who unfortunately passed away as an infant. Abraham's strategy had two main priorities, making sure that Washington was defended, and that there was a conclusive victory. Abraham imprisoned thousands of Confederate sympathizers. In September of 1862, Lincoln sent out the preparatory Emancipation Proclamation, which warned the revolting states that their slaves would be free if they were still rebelling at the start of the new year. On January 1, 1863, the final Emancipation Proclamation was released and slaves in ten states were set free. On April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered, and ended the war. Both Luther and Lincoln were against racial segregation and slavery.
