Throughout the novel, Bradbury shows us that books are powerful communicative tools that open the eyes of individuals to reality by deluding the society as shown through the characters of Faber, Montag and Mildred. Faber whom is a very intellectual professor, guides Montag in having the freedom to think, feel and believe differently. Faber toils to help Montag achieve the freedom to read books and acquire the knowledge he desires. Through the character of Faber, Bradbury demonstrates the censored society they live in as they are being deluded. This potently portrays the theme of censorship that is evident throughout the novel.
Some have named Ray Bradbury “the uncrowned king of the science-fiction writers” because of his imagination and beautiful way of making Fahrenheit 451 come to life. The book Fahrenheit 451 is one of the first books to deal with a future society filled with people who have lost their thirst for knowledge and for whom literature is a thing of the past. The author mainly portrays this world from the point of view of Montag, a man who has discovered the power that knowledge contains and is coming to grips with the fact that it is outlawed. However, the reader also gets to see what life is like for one of the people content in living a life lacking in independent thought and imagination through his wife, Millie.
Books have a history of impacting the views of the masses, influencing thought and bringing about the most spectacular inventions; the Bible, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, The Republic, and so many more. With books playing such a role in society, it is hard to imagine a world without literature. This is the goal of Ray Bradbury’s book, Fahrenheit 451: to explore a world where reading is outlawed, and to show how books, or the lack of, change the way people feel and connect. The general people who do not read, including the protagonist, Guy Montag, seem discontent with their lives and derive no real joy. Conversely, the readers and the thinkers are kinder, bolder, and humorous; Faber and Clarise, for example, leave powerful impacts on Montag with their thinking.

The concept of anti-intellectualism is to eliminate opportunities to acquire knowledge. In the society created by Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451, the capacity for higher level thinking is destroyed. Schools are shallow because they do not focus on higher level thinking in academics. Instead, there is a focus on recreation such as sports and television. This society burns books because their content is troublesome.
On January 5, 2005 Ray Bradbury was interviewed by former chairman of the Endowment for the Arts. The interviewers asked ¨what was his idea of this book” and Ray says ¨Hitler of course, he burnt the book in the streets of Berlin.”

In Ray Bradbury’s book Farenheit 451, it is illegal to own books, and society deems people who “think” and “question” unfit and those people are wanted by the government. In the novel, Bradbury ironically pictures firemen as a group of men who create fires, and the people who “think” and “question” are killed. In this book themes of conformity verses individuality, importance of remembering and understanding history, and freedom of speech and the consequences of losing it. These three thematic ideas are major factors that contributed to how the society’s everyday life is executed.
Here, Faber is in his house telling Montag about how books bring life into the world. Faber is letting Montag know that books are important not because they are books, but because of their meaning. As difficult as they can be to deal with, the pores are the perfect imperfections needed to make the world great. Bradbury shows that books and knowledge are vital and that censoring books robs the world of individuality and freedom. “Give a man a few lines of verse and he thinks he’s the lord of all creation.
Censoring Knowledge Censorship, in a crumbling world, does not act as glue; but rather, as a hammer. All throughout Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, examples of censorship are seen. In his made-up dystopian society the “more powerful” characters use censorship to cover up anything that is seen as risky or “inappropriate”. In this novel the largest group of censored objects are the books. Books could change one’s view entirely.
