Beowulf & Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A basic definition, of a hero is a person that puts others’ lives and safety first. Therefore, he’s defined by his acts and traits not by his looks or social status. He is well respected not only by the ones that he saves, but also by his community as a whole. Heroes come from everywhere around the world, with different capabilities, backgrounds and beliefs. Yet, they have a lot in common, most importantly standing up for the ones that cannot stand for themselves. Two proper examples of heroes are, “The great and mighty Geat, Beowulf,” and “The intelligent and wise Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Both guided their people and hoped to lead them to a greater place that was much more peaceful. Dr. King must have also shared a similar view. Although Beowulf was European and considerably wealthy while, Dr. King was a low middle class African American both shared similar goals. Therefore, both were extremely brave and courageous to stand in the face of such opponents with pride and content. However, they did deal with their issues quite differently. Because of the nature of the clashes, Beowulf used his physical abilities and “godly capabilities” to fight the monsters, because after all, he is fictional unlike Dr. King. In addition, that is a more luring and interesting character for an epic poem. On other hand, Dr. King’s wisdom and elaborate use of literature persuaded his rivals and brought them to their senses. “If we die... it will be for GLORY, not gold.” - Beowulf This quote shows how Beowulf was only after true honor and glory that was acquainted with a noble fighter.
