In all three war stories The Things They Carried, Catch 22 and Apocalypse Now express many truths of war. A of the truth expressed in each story is that war changes one’s perspective of the world, a person who walks into war will not be the same person who walks out. A sense of loss of innocence is attributed to this style and this truth most closely relates to the novel the Things They Carried. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross often thinks of Martha his ongoing love interest. When one of his soldiers, Lavender dies he burns all the pictures of Martha because he believes Martha distracted him, and due to this it caused Lavender to die. This event changed Lieutenant Jimmy Cross’s perspective. Another Truth of war is avoiding reality, Catch 22 shows this style none of the characters mention death or ever speak of it. In the novel Catch 22, Yossarian grows dramatically as a character but remains an antihero. Yossarian learns what's important in life and what is not, such as trophies and medals. Yossarian finds living life in sanctuary is important even if it means being a coward. Yossarian admits in the end of the novel that he is weak and a coward in the war (faked liver injury), but he does not regret his actions. He grows to hate the idea of heroism and believes it will only cause distress not glory in the end. Joseph Heller tries to implicate the ideal that it is far more important to be true to oneself than lose oneself in attempt to impress others.
