On the other hand, Foscolo belonged to the so-called 'Century of Lights ' , which was characterised by the philosophical movement called Enlightenment, which used the reason as primary source of authority and legitimacy, and applied also its thought on religious and political tolerance. In particular, Foscolo felt a strong anxiety about the "eternal nothingness" and for the 'forgetfulness that envelops the man after death ', for this reason, he tried to recover some spiritual values, by idealising some irrepressible human values such as: motherland, love, poetry , freedom, beauty, art, and especially the noble, heroic enterprises, which make worthy to be remembered, and has seen the 'sepolcro ' (tomb) as both, a symbol of his philosophy
