The truth is never spoken. They can either avoid, hide or even twist the truth. In the 1920s, people hid the truth from themselves in order to get what they want. People manipulated others, while others couldn’t accept the truth. In the film Chicago, directed by Rob Marshall, and the novel The Great Gatsby written by F.Scott Fitzgerald, the characters struggle to deal with reality and give false information. They illustrate how people, particularly in the 1920s, avoid the truth in order to get what they need. He is the person everyone wants because he has never lost a case for a female. Roxie and Velma hire him, but they both each had to pay $5,000. In the 1920’s money was a big thing and people had lots of it. Much like Daisy in the novel The Great Gatsby, Mr.Flynn only cared about his social status and money. When Roxie came to him, he immediately started changing the story. He manipulated, created and controlled the press. Mr.Flynn changed the story saying that “The first thing we do is work up sympathy from the press.” He made Roxie lie about her life in order for her to win. During court, Velma claims she has Roxie diary and that it’s evidence. Mr.Flynn admits to Roxie that he tampered with her diary saying, “Oh , don't forget your blessed diary. Hope you don't mind . I added a few erroneous phrases.” All everyone cared was about themselves. Back then, people only cared about their social status or class. The rich, for example, Mr.Flynn, they always got what they want even if it meant that they had to avoid the truth. Similarly to Daisy, he and Daisy got what they wanted by not speaking the truth. Daisy, a woman who is married, loves another man, Gatsby. Daisy and Gatsby had a romantic relationship before she married Tom. When Daisy was with Gatsby for the first time, she instantly fell in love and so did he. Daisy is a woman who wants a normal life. She is wealthy, wants everyone to believe she and Tom have a good relationship and she gets what she wants. When Gatsby and Daisy get in an accident, a hit and run, Gatsby take the blame for Daisy. Gatsby shows how much he loves Daisy by taking the blame. Many people believe that Gatsby killed Myrtle, but the only people who know the truth are Gatsby, Daisy and Nick. Daisy was the one who was driving and hit Myrtle. Daisy lets Gatsby take the blame for her, she didn’t argue nor did she admit anything. She wants to believe that she has a normal life. After the accident, Daisy and Tom leave the East egg. In the 1920’s it was the time when women finally got a right to vote. A woman like Daisy can vote, but can’t admit the truth. Daisy runs away from the truth, she wants to get freedom. Likewise to Roxie, Daisy wants a good life, so they let their loved ones take the blame. Roxie lets Amos take the blame for her crime and Daisy lets Gatsby take the blame for her crime. They both let their loved ones take the blame in order for them to get away from the truth.
