Crucible is based on the 17th-century community of Salem and its historic witch trials committed by the Puritan colony near Boston Massachusetts. This allegorical play criticises politics and its power to repress individuals and through fear and corrupt power. The play centers around a theocratic village overtaken by religious fervour. In 1692 a group of girls fall victim to hallucinations and seizures after dancing in the woods with a black female slave named Tituba. Consequently causing mass hysteria within the village as innocent people were accused of witchcraft and conspiring with the devil. Therefore this boycott led community is left in tatters.
