The two stories, Dante’s Inferno and Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol relate in many ways as well as differ from each other. Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol after he witnessed the tragic events going on in England during the Industrial revolution period, while Dante wrote Inferno during the time of his years of exile. Similarly both Dante and Charles relate their stories in different ways, as well as leaving distinctive differences between the two stories. They both relate around the idea of bad times in society, and they both similarly have a person guiding the main character through different phases in the story, such as the three ghosts represents the past, present and future, and Virgil who guides Dante through Hell. In the Christmas Carol, Scrooge was met with three spirits, each one representing each phases in life. The spirits show up to give Scrooge a guide through what his life could resemble if he follows a certain. Like the three spirits, Virgil, guide for Dante, shows up to attempt to guide and give wisdom on how his life can lead to if he follows a certain path. They all show the main characters what their life would end like if they continued to make the choices they were making. The only difference between the spirits and Virgil, revolves around hat Virgil lasts the whole journey through Hell with Dante while the each of the spirits only last an hour or two with Scrooge. Dante’s Inferno revolves around Dante, himself, trudging through Hell after living a life of torment from the Florentine leaders. Ebenezer Scrooge, main character from A Christmas Carol, devoted his life to his work and decided to cut everyone off. Scrooge even made his employee, Bob Cratchit, work in unbearable conditions everyday. Since Marley, his coworker, passed away, Scrooge became the man who hated Christmas and did not give money to the poor. They relate in similar ways because both sets of spirits trudged them through what could happen to them if they keep up what they do in the real life. They differ because Scrooge realizes his mistakes right after the last spirit shows him his future and how much he affected his employee’s life. At the end of Inferno, Dante is still trudging through the depths of Hell, so he could see Beatrice. He realizes all of the different sins that sinners much go through but does not take it into consideration that he may have that type of life once he dies.
