A government’s pursuit towards complete control of a society will ultimately lead to the development of numerous flawed aspects in humanity. In Veronica Roth’s novel Divergent, the society is divided into 5 factions, each faction based solely on one virtuous trait. Every faction is under the control of a different government who each attempts to keep the citizens in agreement with the exact same morals. The obsession of keeping all the thoughts of the citizens alike within each faction causes the development of hatred between the different factions. Alternatively, in the science fiction film The Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross, the society consists of the capitol; where the wealthy live, and the land of the twelve districts; where the poor live. The nation is under the authority of leaders in the capitol, and the capitol’s attempt in preventing the twelve districts from rebellion results in many inhumane methods of punishment. For the participants of the Hunger Games, they are unwillingly required to murder all other competitors in hopes of being the sole tribute who makes it out alive. The Capitol is eagerly watching the death match on television, enjoying the thrill of the games. The government’s attempt of controlling the districts using the Hunger Games obliges all contestants to brutally murder one another without a second thought, while the wealthy enjoy viewing the death match, unaware of the inhumanness of the process. Thus, the totalitarian governments in both Divergent and The Hunger Games instill desensitization to extreme violence among the population. The use of violence to maintain control over society creates a cruel tension among the citizens, dehumanizing their discernment of
