In Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde , the dualities reflected of the Victorian times. Where people lived a double-life because the norms society set for honourable individuals to comply with were to high for people to come after . Double standards created along of this and fuelled the deception of the middle-class . As society allowed , they lived superficially respectable , moral lives . Alternatively , at night , when doors was closed , that was when people started showing who they really were , showing their dark and desires from the deepest part of their mind .
Interests in math and science. Mr Hyde had developed a potion that allowed him to turn into Dr. Jekyll. Jekyll found a way to separate his good side from his darker side, by transforming himself into a monster free of consciences. But he later found that he was turning into more and more into Mr Hyde. He started turning into Mr. Hyde in random places, the transformations got worse and worse.
The first thing in terms of duality is the title of the book “ The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde” - two people’s names with two concepts and double meanings . It seems like Mr Hyde - the name that suggests about something is being hidden from view - has been hidden in the body of Dr Jekyll for so many years . Whereas Jekyll in some ways wants to kill Mr Hyde and his animal nature - Jekyll means “ I kill” - Je is I in French .
This is shown between a conversation with Mr Utterson and Jekyll when Utterson claims, “‘I have been learning something of young Hyde’. The large handsome face of Dr Jekyll grew pale to the very lips, and there came blackness about his eyes’”. Becoming “pale to the very lips” shows that he is stunned and unable to speak, which is suspicious considering Utterson has mentioned Hyde. “Pale” also has connotations with lifelessness and death which Stevenson might have used to foreshadow the killing of Mr Carew or, since Jekyll is the one being described, Jekyll’s own death by the end. The “blackness about his eyes” also alludes to the fact that he has an immoral side that is emerging.
In ‘Macbeth’, Shakespeare shows the gradual change in the protagonist Macbeth by displaying how he goes from a hero to a tyrant. Similarly, in ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’, Stevenson includes the downfall of his protagonist in his story by showing him as a prestigious gentleman at the start of the play, but near the end he is shown as the villainous Mr Hyde. In ‘Macbeth’ the protagonists downfall is somewhat caused by the Witches and Lady Macbeth whereas in ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ the protagonists downfall is due to his addiction to his potion. At the start of the play, Macbeth is shown as kind and brave due to his acts in the war. King Duncan says, “What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won”.
One of the key differences in how these works show the struggle between good and evil is that the main conflict throughout Dracula is a completely different type altogether compared to Jekyll and Hyde. In Dracula, most of the conflict is person-vs-person interaction, while in Jekyll and Hyde, most of the conflict is internal between the personalities of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Near the beginning of Dracula, once Jonathan Harker realizes that Count Dracula is not a normal nobleman, he attempts to convince the Count to allow him to leave earlier than scheduled. The Count appears to comply, leading Jonathan to the door and exercising his ever formal, unnerving diction. This ruse successfully convinces Jonathan and he walks to the door.
Throughout life, people reinvent themselves constantly, whether the change is through different hobbies, styles, or even environments. People can reinvent themselves because of an unspoken motivation or simply because it is what their minds desire and feel must be accomplished. In The Color Purple and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, both protagonists face changes that end with good resolutions. The characters reinventing themselves proved that living a coarse life can result in happiness or misery. In Alice Walker's "The Color Purple", Celie is introduced as a weak and ugly girl compared to her sister, Netty, who is a beauty queen and intelligent.
Edward Hyde was a creation out of Dr. Jekyll's mind that would come out when consuming a drug. They were total opposites therefore Henry Jekyll had at first enjoyed when becoming Hyde. Dr.Lanyon argued, “ That Hyde was an unpleasant fella to set eyes upon.” From this a person can learn that the character was not someone that people were fascinated by but rather were disguised by. It was also stated by Lanyon that the man was horrible looking.
Critical Response #5 Dr. Jekyll's connection to Mr. Hyde is more than just accepting that Hyde is a part of Jekyll. It is protective and obsessive. In addition to Hyde's psychological part, this relationship might be characterized in a variety of ways. First of all, I think that Jekyll's transition into Hyde gives him permission to engage in actions and wants that he would not otherwise be able to. A sense of freedom and joy is brought about by this indulgence.
Chapter Six Despite a huge manhunt, Hyde is nowhere to be found. Dr. Jekyll becomes happy, throwing dinner parties and engaging in good works. Utterson dines with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Lanyon on the 8th of the month and it's all good, but on the 12th, 14th, and 15th he is denied admittance to the doctor’s house, on the grounds that Jekyll is ill. Utterson calls on Mr. Lanyon, who looks almost dead.
There are a number of differences and few similarities between the characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The differences between the two men are mental, physical and moral. They are two separate personalities. Dr. Jekyll is an extremely intelligent and sane man with many good friends, known for his kindness and affectionate nature. On the other hand, Mr. Hyde is less educated, detestable and a loner.
In the gothic novel “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, Robert Louis Stevenson depicts an idea of the supernatural realm. It is a tale of a man that is well-known among the townspeople as Dr. Henry Jekyll. The doctor transforms into a being completely opposite of himself. Being a man of science, he feels a compulsion to create a potion that will release his alter ego, Mr. Hyde, while protecting his true identity. Throughout the story, many examples of symbolism are presented to the reader.
In 19th century literature, writers explore the creation of new identities in regards to the societies they are writing in. The growth of scientific knowledge in the 1800s caused various discoveries to occur, presenting the events of the three novels as plausible occurrences. Frankenstein is shown to create the Creature due to his obsession with knowledge. Similarly, Jekyll creates Hyde due to scientific interest. Dantès is shown to create his identities, not due to the growth of science, but in order to become part of the development of culture in France after the events of the Revolutionary Wars.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two completely different people. They are different, not just in physical appearance, but also in behaviors. Differences in characters are important especially if there are two main characters or two characters that are mentioned as much as these two are. So, this is not a surprise that these two characters are different in almost everyway. To start, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are different in physical appearance.
The Monster shows humbleness until he is turned on by his creator and his negative environment. The good side of Dr Jekyll is abolished by the powerful evil inside him. Each novel possess a powerful moral and contradicts ideas as well as relating
