In many forms of literature the common theme of humanity's inherent nature is brought up. This can be through many different ways. For instance Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck stars two outcasts trying to make their way through the cutthroat world of early 20th century America. Throughout the story the innocent and pure Lenny is faced with the hard reality of a world not suited to his mental disability. He becomes a criminal or “evil” in the sense that he kills an innocent woman for no apparent reason. In The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera a girl named Petra is placed in a new unfamiliar environment and world. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury features Guy Montag and his pursuit of freedom and change. Guy has lived in a world full of brainwashed people before he becomes an outlier when he finally snaps out. As he snaps out he becomes a fugitive wanted by the law. While all these examples are radically different they all share one common thing. All three of our characters can be seen as evil from a separate perspective. Humans are born inherently good and stay that way because while humans can do evil things they themselves aren't evil. Humans can not be evil from every perspective as there is always a reason for any evil thing that might happen. While some things can be seen as pure evil from one angle they can also be seen as completely justified from another. A prime example of this comes from Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Guy Montag commits many “evil” acts throughout the story. When Guy Montag kills the fire chief by burning the upper portion of his body off we see it as justified. We know the context behind the killing. We know that the fire chief was trying to suppress humanities knowledge through burning books and that he was provoking and beating Guy the entire time. By killing an innocent woman for no apparent cause, he turns into a criminal or "evil" person. Lenny is still a good person as he never does anything wrong for bad reasons or on purpose. She felt as though everything she knew about her life had altered while she was away. She gradually comes to be perceived as a threat to humanity since she is an aberration in this new civilization. In a shocking twist the “villains”, the collective can just as easily be seen as good as they can be seen as evil. Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 depicts Guy Montag and his quest for liberty. Before Guy ultimately snaps out, he has lived in a world where most people have been brainwashed. As he awakens, he turns into a wanted criminal. Through his quest for knowledge and freedom we see that while he is a criminal in the purest sense of the word he has the right motivations and perspective for it.
