Tamara King Mr. Klever ENG III 20 April 2023 Fahrenheit 451 Essay Are we like Fahrenheit 451? Over the course of the book, we have been asked whether we are similar or different from Fahrenheit. Many topics talked about in this book guided me to believe that we are related to the book in modern times. Three topics I felt strongly about to compare similarities between the book and today are drug abuse, technology obsession, and suicide/depression. The first topic that had similarities to today is drug abuse. Over the years drug abuse has been a growing issue in modern society. Studies show there has been a significant increase in the drug use rate from 1953 to the present day, from just eight years ago there has been a growth increase of 70%. In our story, Montag's wife Mildred had an issue with taking a large number of pills which caused her to overdose. "Her face was like a snow-covered island upon which rain might fall, but it felt no rain; over which clouds might pass their moving shadows, but she felt no shadow" (Bradbury 13). While researching I found that nearly 60% of suicides are caused by depression (Centre For Suicide Prevention). In the story, there was an old woman who loved to read books and didn’t want anyone to take them away from her. She felt that it send out a message that what the firemen are doing isn’t helping society it’s only hurting them. The old woman set herself on fire with her books because she felt that a life without them was not worth living (Bradbury 39).
