United States’ Imperialism Power Over Hawaii Throughout the course of the years, the United States began investing their time into intervening in different countries to become a dominant world power in the Western Hemisphere. As the time reached of when the U.S. became more determined and serious over spreading its forces across colonies, a plentiful amount of the world had been already claimed. Only a few territories remained liberated from the imperialist movement, in which Hawaii was one of the unclaimed areas. In order to pertain Hawaii as their own intervention, the U.S. had mainly focussed onto preventing European countries of investing into the Hawaiian markets, resources, political stability, and economic interests.
Hawaii has given the opportunity to the U.S. government to make a substantial amount of profit, which is an incredible reason for bringing annexation to Hawaii. During this time period, sugar was a very high selling product that everyone demanded for and Hawaii had sugar plantations across the land. For example, the Mckinley Tariff was great influential law towards the American economy. The United States has inflicted imperialism on the island Hawaii on January 17, 1893. They did this by overthrowing the government which was a monarchy and its ruler was Queen Liliuokalani. Then by overthrowing the sugar planters who overthrew the Queen, President William Mckinley was able to obtaining the territory for the U.S after the Spanish-American war. The U.S wanted to obtain Hawaii because of its monopoly on Sugar and its Sugar exports to The United States. The United States wanted to obtain the territory also to get rid of taxes on them and the business, and wealthy people were losing their ability to manipulate the government and wanted it as a naval base like pearl harbor.

Looking at some of these events, we see some positives and negatives of imperialistic action taken by the United States, and how it affected the nations imperialized by the United States. After watching the film called ‘Act of War’, I again felt that countries’ do not stand for justice but only pursue their national interests. The reason why Hawaii was so desirable to the United States was the imperialistic characteristic that America had at that time. Even a small island or land is into the consideration of taking over. In detail, the Americans wanted to use the land as their military base and a strategic spot for expanding their imperialism to Asia. The fact that American continent was far away from Asian and European continent, made them realize that in order to empower their global power they need to first dominate the closest countries, even a small land that they consider it trivial.

While talking about annexation, the overthrow had been a key event that led to the annexation of Hawaii to the United States. When Hawaii was still under the reign of King David Kalakaua, he was forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution under duress. Queen Lili’uokalani had yielded her throne in order to avoid bloodshed and trusted that the United States government would right the wrong that had been done to her and the Hawaiian people (Pitzer).
Pilgrims and puritans began a journey to a new land in search for religious freedom, and a fresh start to a brighter future. Both searched for a change to colonize their families, spread and develop their own beliefs of worship, and create a foundation to combine the wealth of opportunity and worship together without the strong influence of England. The geographical change would be the first challenge for the pilgrims and puritans. England held both parties until word of opportunity began to spread like wildfire.
The three main colonies that we hear about are Virginia, Plymouth, and Massachusetts. These three colonies basically define all the others, as each group and its main founder either went for a personal financial gain or to escape religious persecution. Virginia was originally settled by Captain John Smith and grew into a successful trade colony through tobacco. Plymouth was originally founded by the Separatists and was lead by William Bradford. Eventually the dwindling Plymouth joined with Massachusetts which was originally Puritan based.
Miami and New York both are wonderful places to visit. New York, it is one of the most populated cities in the U.S for their large buildings and Miami is one of the state most popular vacation spots. Although there are several similarities between Miami and New York, there are many obvious differences between them in their economy, entertainment, and cultures. New York and Miami are well known for their economy. Living in Miami or New York is extremely luxurious.
